Yang Ming Wins IT Matters Awards for Digital Transformation
Yang Ming Wins IT Matters Awards for Digital Transformation
Yang Ming is committed to implementing digital transformation strategies, with the IT Department actively integrating efforts across various departments. In collaboration with the Marine and Engineering Departments, the IT team successfully developed the Vessel Big Data Dashboard (referred to as the Vessel Dashboard System). This project was submitted for the 2024 IT Matters Awards, overseen by the Ministry of Digital Affairs. Amid strong competition from 253 companies, Yang Ming stood out to win this prestigious award. On December 11, 2024, Senior Vice President Johnny Chang of the IT Department accepted the honor on behalf of the company.
In the fiercely competitive maritime industry, digital transformation and innovation have become pivotal in the post-pandemic era. Based on the current ship-to-shore operations and digital capabilities, Yang Ming has methodically established digital transformation goals and strategies to develop the Vessel Dashboard System. The entire project is being implemented in three phases: digitalization, digital process optimization, and digital automation, ensuring a gradual and systematic approach to achieving comprehensive digital transformation.
The digitalization phase involves converting the extensive paper-based ship-to-shore operations into digital formats. Processes like internal and external audits, and crew dock repair reports are traditionally paper-intensive, prone to input errors, and cumbersome for data transmission, retrieval, and storage. Digitalizing these documents is the first step in establishing a streamlined ship-to-shore digital workflow and serves as the foundational phase of the digital transformation effort. During the digital process optimization phase, the focus shifts to addressing inefficiencies and complexities in current operational workflows. By reassessing existing business processes and leveraging digital technologies, this phase aims to build a more adaptive and efficient operational model. In the final digital automation transformation phase, automation tools are integrated across all layers of the optimized digital workflows. These tools enable automated processing, smart business analytics, and the generation of various statistical reports, significantly reducing labor costs while maximizing the overall benefits of digital transformation.
Based on user feedback provided by the Marine Department, the Vessel Dashboard System achieved an average satisfaction score of 4.1 out of 5. Representing the IT Department, Huang Yi-Cheng and Hsieh Chen-Yang participated in the award selection process, delivering a comprehensive presentation on how the system has improved ship-to-shore business workflows. They also highlighted the system's strengths in predictive analytics and risk management. It is hoped that through this system, along with the recognition received from the IT Matters Awards for digital transformation, will serve as a valuable example for other departments, showcasing the company's commitment to advancing its digital transformation initiatives.
