Yang Ming Low-Carbon Commuting Event Responds to Earth Day
In response to Earth Day, Yang Ming has called on employees to participate in a series of activities, including the "Low-Carbon Commuting Day" held at the Cidu headquarters, encouraging colleagues to commute by bicycle, public transportation, carpooling, and other means to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, various overseas branches have autonomously joined Earthfriendly actions such as greening offices, turning off lights, and beach cleanups, aiming to integrate environmental awareness and emission reduction into employees' daily actions and corporate culture, thus contributing to Yang Ming's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Yang Ming is committed to the international 2050 net-zero target and has implemented measures such as energy-saving retrofits, big data analysis to improve vessel efficiency, optimization of shipping routes, use of shore power, and expansion of biofuel usage to significantly reduce vessel carbon intensity. Since 2023, green energy has been used at onshore locations, gradually working towards reducing total greenhouse gas emissions. To encourage all employees to understand and embrace corporate environmental awareness, the company has actively promoted the ESG Passport program internally over the past two years, leading colleagues to understand environmental protection methods and their importance through diverse activities such as environmental education and volunteer services, thereby enhancing everyone's environmental sustainability awareness. On the eve of this year's Earth Day, a "Low-Carbon Commuting Day" event was specially promoted at the headquarters, encouraging colleagues to commute by public transportation and carpooling. Chairman Cheng Cheng-Mount of Yang Ming also called on employees to ride bicycles from the Cidu headquarters in Keelung City back to Taipei, joining hands to reduce environmental impact in daily commuting behaviors. A total of more than 60 participants completed the 18.5-kilometer cycling challenge, which is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 90 grams per person per kilometer, achieving an overall reduction of approximately 100 kilograms of carbon emissions. In addition to low-carbon commuting, the Taiwan office has avoided the use of disposable plastic utensils and implemented recycling, echoing Earth Day's plastic reduction advocacy. Furthermore, Yang Ming's overseas branches have responded to Earth Day in various ways, including greening office spaces, reducing unnecessary electricity consumption by turning off lights for an hour at offices in the Netherlands, Australia, and Thailand; organizing beach cleanups in Greece and Italy; promoting environmental education courses internally in the United Arab Emirates and the U.S.; launching a low-carbon vegetarian campaign in Singapore, India, Malaysia, and the U.S.; and holding weekend mountain cleanup activities in Hong Kong; organizing pre-loved item sales event in the U.S., all aiming to inject more love and care into the Earth.
Yang Ming adheres to the spirit of sustainable operation, continuously implements various ESG policies, and pays attention to issues such as global warming, climate change, and biodiversity. It is also hoped that through the series of activities on Earth Day, colleagues' attention to environmental protection can be stimulated, and together, we can protect the Earth.
