Environmental and Smart Ships 

Yang Ming upholds the core value of achieving environmental sustainability through energy saving and emissions reduction. We were the first ISM-certified carrier in Taiwan in 1996 and implemented the ISO 14001 environmental management systems in 2004. Through a series of environmental protection measures, the Company has been dedicated to protecting marine ecology, reducing carbon emissions, and air pollution in an effort to ensure a better environment for future generations.
By carrying out fleet renewal, deploying new eco-friendly vessels, optimizing ship sailing attitudes, adjusting cargo ballasting and ensuring energy-efficient draft operation based on stowage planning practices, working with WNI using big data cloud technologies, and other intelligent technologies to enhance operational efficiency through monitoring by the Smart Ship Center, reinforcing fleet carbon reduction management, monitoring the energy consumption performance of vessels, refining the existing vessels for better energy efficiency, the carbon intensity of the Company’s operating vessels in 2022 was 40.21 g/teu-km, reduced by up to 59.54% compared to 2008, exceeding the target of the IMO. The fleet not also uses shore power to reduce air pollution, but also conducts wastewater discharge control and lowers ship speed to maintain local marine ecology.

GREEN VESSEL

Our newly built, environmentally friendly and smart ship 2,800TEU class container vessels-C-Type, is reduced by above 30% energy saving compared to non-energy saving facility vessel, and whole performance efficiency is increased above 10% compared to same class vessels of other companies, its energy saving facilities are as below:

SMART SHIPS MANAGEMENT

New built 2,800 TEU class container were awarded the world’s first batch of container vessels that have obtained the Smart INF (Data INFrastructure for Smart Function implementation) and Smart SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) certifications of the American Bureau of Shipping, the first batch of ships in Taiwan that have obtained the SmartShip OE (Operational Enhancement) and PE (Performance Enhancement) certifications from the Det Norske Veritas, the first batch of ships in the world to obtain the SMARTSHIP (Machinery1) Smart Mark certification from the Bureau Veritas

Adopt latest anti-resistance and anti-fouling coating 

Under water outside shells (vertical & flat bottom areas) are applied with Tin free instead of Tin-based self-polishing coating (SPC) to prevent from contaminating aqua marine organisms. The use of Tin free SPC is in response to growing international concern over the harmful effects upon organism when Tin is used as anti-foulant on ship's hulls.

The Newest frequency convertibility electric motor of deck machinery reduce the risk of marine pollution by hydraulic oil compare to traditional deck machinery and reduce carbon emission by lower generator fuel consumption.

NOx TierII compliance main engine with electrical control and Low-Load tuning EGB mode

Equipped with electronically controlled, this type of main engine can maintain the operation at a lower speed without black smoke. The fuel consumption during low speed operation is lower than traditional type, which can achieve the purpose of saving energy and reducing pollutant emissions. Besides, installed EGB (Exhaust Gas Bypass) system make more energy-saving under the normal operating speed (25%~70% of the maximum power). For nitrogen oxides (NOx), it complied with IMO NOx Tier II regulations.  

Navigation big data return to shore for monitoring real time

Equipped with intelligent information architecture technology, collect the navigation big data during marine service and transmit to cloud database in real time, then use the monitoring software to analyze, monitor and predict the health of the hull structure to ensure the safety at sea.

Stern tube air seal

Air guard stern tube seal instead of Simplex seal of propeller shaft uses the air as a medium to keep the sea water from ingress into engine room along stern tube. Air guard system is developed by several prestigious makers and introduced to very large container vessels in the beginning. In case of the occurrence of any seal ring breakage, only air blown into sea water or sea water ingress into engine room so as to prevent from lube oil pollution. Possibility of pollution will be limited  

Using HFC free refrigerant

Adoption of refrigerant R-407C (GWP<2000) for air condition, provision refrigerating plant and unit coolers. Plants spaces are also equipped with refrigerant leakage detecting system. By using HFC free refrigerant, there is no direct harmful impact on the environment to avoid depletion of ozone layer and reduce greenhouse effect. All the pants spaces are equipped with refrigerant leakage detecting system in order to limit pollution in the very first time.  

The Latest Open type scrubber

In order to meet the requirements of the IMO 2020 sulfur limit order, Yang Ming fleet has been using ultra-low sulfur fuel (VLSFO) as the main fuel since 2020; and plans to install scrubber on some vessels, and the installation would be completed in 2020 to comply with international conventions. The sulfur oxide (SOx) emission is decreasing and more environmentally friendly after scrubber installation 

Vacuum Toilet system

Living quarter is fitted with modern Vacuum Toilet system to reduce the consumption of fresh water as well as to reduce the sewage water. Meanwhile, the sewage collection tank is enlarged to accommodate the black water up to 12-day's consumption. Based on the combination effects of both above, the berthing time at port or sailing time along the coast or in the restricted area can be extended to fulfill the requirements and reduce the risks of pollution.
