Yang Ming Partners with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to Advance AI Industry-Academia Collaboration
To further promote digital transformation and smart operations, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. (Yang Ming) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the College of Management of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) on May 19 at Yang Ming headquarters. The agreement was signed by Yang Ming Chairman Feng-Ming Tsai and Dean Yu-Chiun Chiou of the NYCU College of Management, witnessed by Administrative Deputy Minister Kuo-Shian Lin of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and NYCU President Chi-Hung Lin. The partnership aims to combine Yang Ming's shipping industry expertise with NYCU's leading AI research capabilities to accelerate the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in smart shipping and operational management systems.
Amid global supply chain restructuring, rapid digital development, and the net-zero transition, the shipping industry must accelerate transformation through data-driven and intelligent technologies. Leveraging Yang Ming's operational experience, shipping data, and industry application scenarios, the collaboration will integrate NYCU's expertise in artificial intelligence, data analytics, and intelligent systems. The cooperation will support Yang Ming in developing AI applications for route and fleet management, carbon emission management tools, smart logistics, and supply chain management. Through executive-level research and technical exchanges, the project also aims to enhance operational decision-making efficiency, workplace safety, service quality, and operational resilience.
Administrative Deputy Minister Kuo-Shian Lin, a distinguished NYCU alumnus, stated during the signing ceremony that container shipping is a critical link connecting Taiwan's industries with the global market. As the industry faces challenges from economic cycles and geopolitical changes, future competitiveness will increasingly depend on smart technology, digital governance, and sustainability capabilities. He noted that the collaboration between Yang Ming and NYCU combines industry experience with academic research strengths to advance smart shipping, digital governance, and sustainability research, while enhancing Taiwan's international visibility and cultivating future maritime talent.
Chairman Feng-Ming Tsai stated that Yang Ming's vision is "to become customers' first-choice transportation group with key influence." He emphasized that future competitiveness will rely not only on fleet scale and network deployment, but also on data analytics, operational efficiency, and intelligent technology integration. Yang Ming expects to leverage NYCU's research expertise to establish AI and machine learning frameworks across operational processes, while utilizing Yang Ming's operational environment and historical data for practical validation and system integration. Currently, Yang Ming has already introduced digital healthcare technology into seafarer health management through daily data analysis and health monitoring. Going forward, the company aims to expand AI applications in shore-based operations to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen the competitiveness of Taiwan's shipping industry.
Facing the rapid development of digital transformation and AI, Yang Ming continues to develop internal AI applications while expanding external partnerships and aligning with international standards. These efforts aim to improve operational efficiency, strengthen safety management, enhance customer service, reinforce operational resilience, and advance sustainable development goals.
