Yang Ming Honored at the 16th Arts and Business Awards Receives the "Cultural Sustainability Award"
On November 16, 2023, the Ministry of Culture hosted the 16th Arts and Business Awards ceremony, where the Company received not only the Golden Award for subsidizing the Yang Ming Cultural Foundation but also won, for the first time, the "Cultural Sustainability Award" for developing cultural sustainability which recognizes the Company's ceaseless effort in promoting a culture of marine sustainability and helping the general public to learn more about their local communities as well as the ocean. Ms. Caroline T.Y. Chiu, YM's Chief Administrative Officer & Senior V. P., attended the event on behalf of the Company to accept the accolades.
The Arts and Business Awards value corporations' participation in arts and creative activities and encourage corporate efforts in fostering an appreciation for culture and building a proper cultural environment. In 2005, the Company established the Yang Ming Cultural Foundation that combines professionalism in marine transport and ideals of a sustainable ocean. The YM Oceanic Culture & Art Museum was originally a century-old building by the Keelung Harbor which underwent painstaking restoration and is now a mustvisit meeting point brimming with marine culture for visitors. The museum hosts a variety of exhibitions, events, and lectures. For instance, "On Board: Sailing from Keelung to the World" is a regular event where the roles of container shipping in international trade are elaborated from seafarers' perspectives and routine operation. "Novice Maritime Staffer" is a fun field trip that begins from Keelung Harbor. Young kids in this activity can learn about the harbor, the ocean, as well as interesting knowledge of maritime staffer. Through deconstruction and observation, "Rethinking and Reusing Ship Scrapping" offers a fertile ground for putting scrapped parts into daily use. This activity brings together marine transport and daily life while practicing sustainable reuse of ship scraps. "Navigator KidsSummer/Winter Camp" provides opportunities for young kids to read about and tour around the harbor area. While sightseeing Keelung from the comfort of a boat, young kids can also explore maritime staffers' onboard knowledge and experiences. The above events are designed to encourage people to interact with the ocean, to feel passionate about the ocean, and in turn, feel the urgent need to protect the ocean. At the same time, by connecting the history and culture of marine transport with local life, these events allow for a deeper understanding of local community and marine environment while also substantiating the stories of local culture. Upholding the principle of bringing together marine culture, humanities, and art, Yang Ming is a long-standing and active promoter of SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Apart from continuing marine education and local cultural events, the Company will also employ diverse and creative means to promote its ESG values and marine culture, as well as to keep its promise of achieving community well-being. Ready for the next journey, Yang Ming's ships will continue to bring about happiness and sail toward a sustainable future.
