Yang Ming Cultural Foundation Joins Forces with NTOU and Hon Hai to Promote Marine Environmental Protection and Education
On November 6, 2024, the Yang Ming Cultural Foundation (Yang Ming Foundation), National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), and Hon Hai Technology Group (Hon Hai) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the YM Oceanic Culture & Art Museum to jointly promote marine environmental protection and education. This collaboration aims to integrate the expertise and resources of the three parties to advance the concept of "life, production, and ecology" in marine environmental education. The initiative seeks to enhance public awareness and participation in marine conservation, thereby fostering sustainable practices.
The Yang Ming Foundation was established by Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming) in 2005 with the aim of preserving and promoting marine culture. Chairman Tsai Feng-Ming of Yang Ming has fully supported this tripartite collaboration, emphasizing that Yang Ming aligns its efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). By promoting marine cultural education and supporting the co-prosperity of local communities, Yang Ming fulfills its corporate social responsibility. The Yang Ming Foundation has long organized and hosted various marine-related educational activities, such as publishing environmental education picture books and conducting "Yang Ming Classroom" sessions in schools. These initiatives aim to foster marine literacy from a young age, extending from schools to families and communities, thereby enhancing public awareness of marine conservation and deepening the nation's commitment to sustainable marine practices.
At the event, Yang Ming Foundation CEO Lin Yi-Cheng emphasized that this tripartite collaboration highlights the significance of cross-sector efforts in promoting sustainable marine development. Lin expressed anticipation for future resource and idea exchanges with NTOU and Hon Hai. NTOU Vice President Jan Fan-Hua noted that the university will contribute its expertise in marine research and education to assist in planning environmental education programs, exhibitions, and scientific educational activities, ensuring seamless cooperation with Hon Hai and the Yang Ming Foundation to advance marine sustainability. Hon Hai Chief Environmental Officer, Hong Rong-Cong, shared that Hon Hai has been actively involved in ecological conservation, collaborating with NTOU since 2023 to establish fish reef and algae reef demonstration modules. He expressed excitement about partnering with the Yang Ming Foundation, which has a long-standing commitment to marine education, to continue working together toward the sustainable development of Taiwan's marine environment.
This collaboration will begin by responding to the Ministry of Education's "Taiwan Science Festival" under the theme "Trust Science, Proceed to Sustainability" with two marine environmental education events at the YM Oceanic Culture & Art Museum on November 16 and November 23. The events will feature engaging activities such as "DIY Transparent Fish Bone Experiment" and "Ocean Acidification: The Sour Sea," aimed at promoting seafood education. Participants, both young and old, will explore the structure of fish bones through hands-on activities and gain a deeper understanding of the impact of carbon dioxide on ocean acidification, exploring connections between marine ecosystems and global warming. The events have already garnered enthusiastic responses for their entertaining and educational content.
Looking ahead, the Yang Ming Foundation, NTOU, and Hon Hai will continue their collaborative efforts to promote marine protection and sustainable environmental technologies. Future initiatives will focus on topics such as innovative fish reef and algae reef applications, coral restoration techniques, oceanic carbon sinks, marine microplastics, and marine biotechnology and applications. Together, they are committed to advancing sustainable development goals, fostering the concept of harmonious coexistence with the ocean, and raising public awareness to protect the vibrant blue seas.

Yang Ming is advancing its sustainability efforts to meet the 2050 net-zero emissions target. Beginning this year, the Company has been gradually integrating biofuels into its fleet to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In December, Yang Ming became the first foreign carrier to bunker B30 very-low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) at Busan Port, receiving 1,000 metric tons. This milestone underscores its commitment to emission reduction.

With annual achievements in sustainability and transparent disclosures in its sustainability reports consistently earning accolades, Yang Ming achieved remarkable recognition in 2024. This year, the company was honored with the "Taiwan Top 100 Model Enterprises Award" for the third time in the Comprehensive Performance category and received the "Sustainability Report - Transportation Industry Category 1 Platinum Level" for the second time. The awards were accepted on December 11, 2024, by President Cliff K. R. Pai on behalf of the company.
