Sewage Disposal Management

Water resources are also a key concern for Yang. The Company strictly complies with water resource regulations established by competent authorities at operational locations, International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and other international regulations for water resource use and discharge.

Water Resource Management Measures

Boundary Management Measure Description

Fleet
Ballast Water Treatment Equipment
  • Please refer to Section 3.8 Conservation of Biodiversity and Marine Ecology for details.
Vacuum Toilet Systems
  • Sanitary facilities in ship accommodation areas that reduce freshwater consumption during flushing while decreasing wastewater generation.
Clean Bilge Water Tank
  • The tanks store clean condensation water produced by main engine air coolers to reduce the working load of oil-water separators.

Onshore business locations
Install water-saving devices and regularly inspect pipelines
  • Adjust faucet water output within usable range to avoid wasting water resources, prioritize purchasing water-saving label products, regularly inspect for pipeline leaks, and immediately analyze and improve when usage is abnormal.
  • Water bottles are placed in toilet tanks to save water.
  • The 2nd floor toilets in Taipei office use dual-flush water-saving toilets to conserve water, estimated to save 50% water consumption per use.
Reclaimed Water Reuse
  • Taipei owned office building has installed a rainwater recovery system to irrigate various and landscape vegetation, expected to recover 134 tons of rainwater annually with annual carbon reduction of approximately 0.0073 metric tons CO2e.
  • Recycle wastewater for reuse in watering flowers, grass, and trees.
Office Wastewater Management
  • Keelung Xinyi Building domestic wastewater and washing wastewater are directly discharged to Keelung City public sewerage system.
  • Kaohsiung Building septic tank is pumped at least twice annually; discharge water is sampled and tested for legally required water quality testing items at discharge points (twice annually); storm drains are irregularly inspected and immediately cleaned when sludge and foreign objects are present.
  • Qidu Building domestic wastewater and washing wastewater from 2nd floor and above are directly discharged to Keelung City public sewerage system; 1st floor and below are pumped from basement wastewater pumps to public sewerage system.
Container Washing Wastewater Management at Container Yard
  • Industrial wastewater: Container washing areas are equipped with wastewater filtration separation equipment to perform oil-water separation of container washing water to meet Ministry of Environment discharge water standards before sea discharge, with annual water quality testing and irregular audits by the Ministry of Environment.
  • Domestic wastewater: Approximately 40,000 liters monthly average discharged to septic tank, with Ministry of Environment commissioned septic pumping operations twice annually.
Water Resource Education and Promotion
  • Water conservation awareness campaigns are conducted quarterly.
  • Promote environmental education or online advocacy courses to cultivate employees' water conservation and sustainability awareness.

※ The above table sources are freshwater (≤ 1,000 mg/L total dissolved solids).
※ The Company's onshore business locations do not extract water from water-stressed areas.
※ Yang Ming’s Qidu headquarters building and Kaohsiung Branch use RO systems to recover partial wastewater annually and reuse it for domestic water.

※ Water replenishment volume was not recorded in 2022. Since vessels are not equipped with flow meters, discharge volumes cannot be recorded.

To reduce purchasing third-party tap water, Yang Ming vessels are all equipped with fresh water generators. The fresh water generator uses the vessel engine's cylinder liner cooling water as its heat source and converts seawater into distilled water through vacuum distillation heating and vaporization condensation. While the fresh water generator operates, it also removes heat from the cylinder liner cooling water, thereby enhancing engine cooling effectiveness. The freshwater produced by the fresh water generator is mainly used for boilers and domestic water. The drinking water for seafarers is mainly replenished when vessels dock at terminals, with no water extraction from water-stressed areas.

Vessel water consumption is divided into machinery equipment and accommodation personnel consumption. Since there are no measuring devices, discharge volumes are not recorded. The Company's management measures are described as follows: Yang Ming vessels' engine room bilge water uses oil-water separators complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) regulations and adopts coastal and port environmental protection policies exceeding convention requirements, conducting legal operations beyond 15/25 nautical miles offshore, under conditions of appropriate vessel speed, oil pollution concentration below 15ppm, and non-Antarctic areas for sea discharge. Greywater includes drainage from dishwashing water, bathing water, laundry water, shower and washbasin drainage. Currently, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships does not regulate greywater treatment. Yang Ming exceeds convention requirements by installing or retrofitting greywater storage tanks. Future newbuilds will all be equipped with greywater storage tanks. Current vessels do not discharge within 15/25 nautical miles of shore, storing greywater in onboard greywater storage tanks.
