Yang Ming Garners International Recognition for Marine Conservation Efforts
Aligning with the UN's SDG 14 on marine protection and conservation, Yang Ming is a long-term participant in the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the EcoAction Program of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. In 2022, the YM fleet garnered international recognition for actively protecting blue whale habitats and initiating voluntary conservation measures. Given these efforts, the fleet was respectively awarded the Sapphire Awards and the Blue Circle Awards.
Each year, the vessel deceleration program for blue whale protection is implemented from May to December. As a participant since 2016, YM requires all of its vessels on the waters of Southern California and San Francisco Bay to voluntarily sail under 10 nautical knots. This enables the whales to safely migrate to said waters to feed, allows marine lives to live in a safe environment, and ensures long-term sustainability of the ocean. Apart from the deceleration program, all of YM's ships have been equipped with conservation mechanisms such as the ship-toshore power system following the Company's participation in the EcoAction Program launched by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. The system allows ships to plug in to the onshore electricity grid when in port, thereby reducing carbon emissions, lowering the cost for fuels, and achieving the dual goals of minimizing fuel consumption and environmental protection.
As an active participant in international programs, YM adopts the highest standard when it comes to climate governance and ocean sustainability. All of its ships are coated with the newest tin-free paint to avid causing genetic mutations among marine lives. The ship's rubbish, waste water, and ballast water are strictly managed according to the international conventions. All of the new containers built in and after 2022 are coated with water-based paint, thereby effectively reducing VOC emission by 2,657 tons. Also, all of the newlybuilt freezers use the R134a refrigerant that does not emit the ozonedepleting substances (ODS). These efforts indicate the Company's dedicated attention to controlling air pollutants and carrying out promises of environmental protection in the routine operation strategies for achieving sustainability.
