Yang Ming Recognized for Outstanding Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives
On November 21, Yang Ming received a Bronze Award at the ceremony of the 5th National Enterprise Environmental Protection Award for actively carrying out internal environmental and carbon reduction policies. This recognition underscores Yang Ming's commitment to implementing robust internal environmental and carbon reduction policies. Senior Manager Devin Hsu, representing Yang Ming's Marine Technology Group, accepted the award during the ceremony from Minister Fuh-Sheng Shieu of the Ministry of Environment.
Hosted by the Ministry of Environment, the National Enterprise Environmental Protection Award is widely regarded as the most prestigious domestic recognition for environmental protection. Competitors for the award are selected and assessed across five main categories: environmental policy and management, energy resource conservation, pollution prevention and reduction, environmental participation, and other noteworthy efforts.
Over the years, Yang Ming has focused on deepening environmental sustainability efforts. In preparation for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, Yang Ming is diligently implementing its environmental policy and management both onboard and onshore. The ambitious targets aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% and 70% by 2030 and 2040, respectively, compared to 2018 levels.
In the pursuit of energy conservation, Yang Ming gradually replaced older ships with new ones and optimized ship hull form to save energy. Leveraging big data and cloud technology to monitor ships' energy consumption has led to improved overall operational efficiency. Yang Ming also utilizes onshore power supplies. With these efforts, Yang Ming achieved a remarkable 59.54% reduction in carbon intensity for its operating ships in 2022 compared to 2008 levels, surpassing the goals set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
To reduce pollution, Yang Ming employs water-based paints for containers, significantly decreasing the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Company also aligns with the Ministry of Environment's Green Office Policy in all onshore operations, implementing measures to improve energy consumption efficiency and promote green procurement.
Notable achievements include being recognized as a green procurement corporation for consecutive years, transitioning company cars to fully electric or hybrid vehicles, and replacing machinery at container yards with electronic alternatives. By 2024, all Yang Ming offices across Taiwan are expected to consume up to 20% renewable energy. Digital transformation efforts have significantly improved Yang Ming's e-services, with a substantial decrease in paper bill transport successfully reducing carbon emissions by 213 tonnes and toner usage by 2.1 tonnes over the past year.
In environmental participation, Yang Ming collaborated with a startup to clean up New Taipei City's Pi-t'ou Fishing Harbor, with over a thousand employees collecting 6.5 tonnes of debris. Additionally, a collaborative effort with the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology aims to restore approximately 1,000 coral reefs between 2023-2024, showcasing the Company's continuous dedication to safeguarding ocean biodiversity.
Yang Ming takes pride in providing professional and quality container transport services while actively contributing to the community. The Company remains committed to the balance of environmental protection, fulfilling social responsibilities, maintaining solid corporate governance, and honoring sustainability promises to all stakeholders.
