Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming) was conferred the Corporate Sustainability Award at the 18th National Sustainable Development Awards Ceremony organized by the Executive Yuan’s National Council for Sustainable Development on December 14. President Patrick S.C. Tu attended the event to receive the award.Considering the ongoing impact of global warming, Yang Ming is sparing no effort to achieve the goal of net zero emission. As a result of its sustainable business strategies, energy-saving design and management, as well as the building of state-of-the-art and environmentally-friendly smart ships, the Company in 2021 successfully reduced its fleet’s carbon intensity by 57.38% as compared to 2008, far exceeding the IMO standards. Yang Ming is planning to build more dualfuel LNG container vessels that run on cleaner energies to align with climate change governance and move toward lowcarbon transition. In addition, the Company is playing an active role in expanding its digital innovation services, such as the launch of Line Bot, e-D/O, smart documentation, and online price inquiry or quotation. Moreover, the Company is using blockchain to expedite marine transport and process of trading and financing, thereby upgrading customer services. The use of AI also plays a key role in identifying dangerous goods so as to bolster transport safety. Yang Ming is a stalwart of business integrity and transparency when it comes to governance and information disclosure. Through cooperation with local maritime schools and donation of shipping-related equipment, the Company is aiming to close to gap between theory and practice while planting the seed for future marine talents. Placing great emphasis on local communities’ development, Yang Ming so far has organized an array of cleanup and sustainable events. This year, for instance, the Company joined hand with the Azure Alliance to clean up Pi-t’ou Fishing Harbor, collecting rubbish weighing 5,664.3 kg. In answer to the global call for preserving biodiversity, the Company is partnering with National Museum of Marine Science and Technology on the coral restoration project to safeguard and restore marine biology.
Yang Ming’s sustainability practices are in line with Taiwan’s move towards sustainable development: circular economy, speed up decarbonization through energy transition, ecological conservation, and digital revolution. These practices are in agreement with the objective of public participation in the sustainable development of local and everyday life, which underlines the National Sustainable Development Awards. This year saw a total of 63 companies and institutes vying for the Corporate Sustainability Award, which was conferred after three rounds of rigorous evaluation. As Yang Ming is celebrating its 50th anniversary, the recognition brought by this award is propelling the Company to continue its ESG practices so as to achieve the goal of environmental sustainability, overall social prosperity, and well-rounded corporate governance.
