Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation presents a new picture book on ocean conservation in collaboration with six major museums to deepen the concepts of marine ecological protection and sustainable development

In order to enhance public awareness and action on marine ecological conservation, Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation has partnered with the Bureau of Environmental Protection, Keelung City for three consecutive years to organize a themed picture book competition centered around "Ocean Friendly." Each year, the first prize-winning creator's work is selected and matched with a publishing company for publication and market release. Through the medium of picture book art, the foundation aims to implement its efforts in promoting marine cultural and artistic education while further advocating for marine conservation and the United Nations' "2030 Sustainable Development Goals."

This year, with the theme "Marine Ecological Conservation and Reducing Ship Speed to Protect Blue Whales," the competition went through six months of artwork submissions and evaluation. The picture book "Yang Yang and Slow Whale" was recently published and is scheduled to be officially presented at the Yang Ming Oceanic Culture & Arts Museum on October 20th. Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation has generously donated the picture book to a total of 418 elementary schools in Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City, hoping that these books will become an integral part of children's education and assist the new generation in establishing the right environmental conservation values.

Simultaneously, the foundation, in collaboration with the Taiwan Cetacean Society and six major domestic museums, organized the "Sustainable Message Delivery: Picture Book Outcomes Tour" campaign. Keelung City Mayor Xie Guo-liang and the Speaker of the City Council, Tong Zi-wei, also delivered speeches at the event. Mayor Xie especially recognized Yang Ming Marine's contributions to corporate ESG and called on everyone to work alongside Yang Ming Marine to disseminate knowledge about marine conservation step by step throughout Taiwan.

Slowing Down Ships, Advancing Culture, Promoting Sustainability and Educational Objectives Through Picture Books
"Yang Yang and Slowly the Whale" a collaborative creation by the Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation, renowned domestic picture book author Wang fan, Nian and the first-prize winner of the 'Friendly Ocean Picture Book Competition,' Xiao fan, Chang. Through a heartwarming story, this book narrates the fascinating encounter between Yang Yang and Slowly the Whale, and the potential threat to marine life, especially whales, posed by the "Whale Strike" on the ocean highway.
This work cleverly starts from the perspective of whales, prompting readers to contemplate the impact of vessels sailing the busy maritime highways on underwater life. It also conveys the essential message of ocean conservation and respect for life from a child’s perspective in a clear and accessible manner. The foundation hopes through this engaging story, which can raise public awareness of marine ecology and respond to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal regarding "underwater life." It calls upon all sectors of society to collectively protect the precious underwater life. In order for these valuable ideas to take root and flourish in the hearts of children, the Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation has specially prepared picture books to be donated to elementary schools in Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City. The foundation emphasizes that children's minds are the most receptive to new knowledge and have the potential to be a driving force for change. Through this picture book, we hope children can understand every life deserves respect, and every action can impact our shared home.

Yang Ming Marine demonstrates proactive action in achieving the United Nations SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation's Chairman, Cheng Mount, Cheng stated in his address that Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation is a global marine company with numerous opportunities to encounter whales and dolphins. Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation and the Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation jointly strive to practice the seventeen indicators of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in the thirteenth indicator, "Climate Action." We continuously work to reduce carbon emissions by adopting low-carbon ship technologies, optimizing navigation routes, and enhancing environmental awareness among our employees.

In the fourteenth indicator, "Life Below Water," we have participated in the Blue Whale Ship Speed Reduction Program led by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). When our fleet operates in areas where whales and dolphins reside, we implement speed reduction measures to protect marine life. Therefore, through the selection of picture books, we aim to increase public awareness of marine ecological conservation and strengthen their commitment to marine protection. This year's theme, "Marine Ecological Conservation, Ship Speed Reduction for Blue Whales," reflects our dedication to this cause and underscores our understanding that there is more we can do in addressing the issues of Sustainable Development Goals.

Collaborating with six major domestic museums and the Chinese Cetacean Society to jointly promote marine conservation and knowledge dissemination
This presentation is particularly special as Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation and Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation have joined forces with six major domestic museums and the Chinese Cetacean Society to form a strong alliance. Through the joint release of the picture book results and touring promotion activities, we hope to convey the crucial message of marine ecological conservation more broadly. The participating museums include: National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, National Taiwan Science Education Center, National Museum of Science and Technology, National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, National Museum of Natural Science, and National Taiwan Museum. Yang Ming Marine Culture Foundation stated that this initiative aims not only to promote picture books but also to advance quality education through various partnerships, encouraging more people to engage in sustainable development issues. This contributes to the realization of the United Nations' thirteenth indicator 'Climate Action,' the fourteenth indicator 'Life Below Water,' and the seventeenth indicator 'Partnerships for the Goals.' We believe that through these efforts, we can rally more partners to actively participate in and support global climate action and marine ecological conservation goals, and we hope to encourage greater awareness of these issues among the people of Taiwan.
