Yang Ming -Promotes Environmental Sustainability: Unveils Green Rooftop and Advances Green Energy Procurement
To implement the government's policy on net-zero carbon emissions, Yang Ming has recently initiated the installation of ecological green roof on top of its corporate buildings in Taipei. This green roof integrates rainwater recycling, a solar energy system, and carbon sequestration through potted plants, bringing much-needed greenery into the workspaces and the city as a whole.Such installation is indeed a perfect combination of green economy and environmental sustainability.
Today, global warming has had very negative impact on the sustainability of the environment. Urban development, leading to the reduction of natural green spaces, accelerates global warming. To improve the ecology of urban spaces and enhance the comfort of office blocks, Yang Ming began its ecological green roof project by installing greenery facilities on top of its office buildings. The project is designed to beautify the overall environment, cool down buildings by green insulation, purify air, and achieve biodiversity through island hopping. These facilities are expected to lower the roof-top floor temperature, with the temperature in the indoor space directly beneath it down by up to 5° C. The solar power system can save up to 3,960 kWh of electricity, reducing energy cost and increasing the percentage of renewable energy. At the same time, the concept of edible landscaping is nourished by the rainwater recycling system, resulting in the varied yields of edible and landscaping plants such as mint, rosemary, sweet-scented marigold, Fukuyama lettuce, and perennial vines. This allows for an intimate experience of farming and agriculture in urban life. In addition, a total of 134 tons of rainwater can be recycled and up to 336 kilograms of carbon sequestration can be achieved annually. In conclusion, the green roof will alleviate the pressure on urban drainage, protect water resources, and contribute to the mitigation of climate change.
Apart from the green roof, Yang Ming has also commenced procurement of green energy. In October 2023, Yang Ming's headquarters in Cidu began using green electricity. Green electricity will be extended to branch offices located in Taiwan, starting January 1, 2024. Throughout 2024, renewable energy will account for approximately 20% of the entire power consumption in all of Yang Ming's onshore offices. The reduction in dependance on traditional energy and the yearly increase in the consumption of renewable energy both reflect Yang Ming's commitment to environmental sustainability.
